You don't have to go home Mr Sterling, but you're not welcome in the NBA anymore...

What happened?!?!

NBA Commissioner, Adam Sliver announced a lifetime ban for Los Angeles Clippers Owner Donald Sterling as result of his racial comments that were leaked to TMZ and Deadspin this past Friday.  On top of the lifetime ban, a maximum fine of 2.5 million dollars was assessed with the money going towards anti-discrimination efforts.

After contemplating not playing, the Clipper's players displayed their feelings concerning their owner's comments by wearing their warm-ups inside out and wore their alternate jerseys that just say "Los Angeles" in their game 4 match-up with Golden State on Sunday.

Break it Down
Donald Sterling's ex-mistress (half black, half mexican) was behind the recording, but claims she did not leak it.  Some called for Adam Silver to impose an immediate suspension and fine, but the Commissioner smartly waited for the investigation into the audio recording to be completed before issuing his statement today.  In his press conference Silver announce the lifetime ban and fine and then shared his plan to force a sale of the team:

""I will urge the board of governors to exercise its authority to force a sale of the team and will do everything to ensure it happens,""

How is that done?  3/4 of the owners must agree to that he needs the heave-ho and vote to oust Donald Sterling.  Silver was pressed by a reporter on if he felt he had the support of enough owners to force the sale, he responded:

"I fully expect to get the support I need from other NBA owners to remove him,"

You might be asking, but they banned him, why do they need to force a sale?   Even though Mr. Sterling is banned, he still can profit of the team.  He has no saying in the operations and is not allowed at practices or games, but he is still legally the owner so all profits go to him.  This obviously is going to continue to upset players, coaches, and sponsors.  Allstate and CarMax have already pulled their sponsorships with the Clippers with others putting theirs on "hold".

Excellent Job, all done Right?!?
Nope.  As mentioned before, the owners need to step up and show that discrimination won't be tolerated in the NBA and that people of this ilk won't be allowed to take part in the league.  If things go as the Commissioner plans and Sterling is ousted, I then would expect lawsuits galore.  Mr. Sterling is a lawyer and has used that background often in his business dealings.  Especially when confronted with discrimination lawsuits. (great article)    *sigh*
